Fashion Corsets Or Steel Boned Corsets
Which Is Best For You?
Fashion Corset Tops - Fashion corsets are constructed with lightweight acrylic boning and usually with 2 layers of fabric and are less costly. Acrylic boned fashion corset tops are not for tight-lacing or waist training and offer about 1" to 6" of cinch depending on the quality and stiffness of the corset fabric and if there are static steel back bones.
Authentic Steel Boned Corsets & Waist Training Corsets- Usually structured with heavier and more layers of fabric and is constructed with either spiral steel boning or flat sprung steel boning. Authentic steel boned corsets can cinch your waist up to 4" to 6". Authentic steel boned corsets with at least 20 spiral steel bones are made for tight lacing and waist training with a cinch of 5" to 8" or more.
Types of Corset Boning
Acrylic corset boning are plastic, lightweight bones that are only used in fashion corset tops, Fashion corset tops are corset tops that look like corsets but cannot be considered as shapewear. Although acrylic boning does offer some stiffness to the corset top the corset may kink if you will be sitting for an extended period of time.
Flat Sprung Steel Boning
Sprung steel, or flat steel, bones are used in spiral steel boned corsets to sandwich the eyelets and prevent ripping, and in sturdier corsets such as authentic corsets that are not used for waist training.
Spiral Steel Boning
Spiral steel boning is used in authentic corsets and waist training corsets or where there are extreme curves within the pattern of the corset. In our opinion, spiral steel boning are the most comfortable kind of boning, although not the most supportive, as they do allow for a very small amount of bend.
